Atopic Eczema Treatments

In most cases of atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema or simply eczema), medications are the most common form of treatment in relieving inflammation, irritation, and itching. In mild cases of atopic dermatitis, home remedies and self-care measures such as moisturizing regularly may be enough to control the symptoms.

However, in cases where symptoms do not improve with at-home treatments, a more potent form of medical treatment may be necessary to ease the symptoms of atopic eczema.

Atopic Eczema Treatments: Medication Options

Topical therapies such as ointments are the most common form of atopic eczema treatment. These medications are dabbed onto the affected parts of the skin on a regular basis until there is an improvement. Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids are sometimes also prescribed depending on the patient’s symptoms.

– Topical ointments containing corticosteroids are the most effective form of treatment in easing atopic dermatitis symptoms.

– Because atopic dermatitis symptoms are brought on by a faulty immune system reaction, there are also topical medications known as calcineurin inhibitors that work by suppressing the immune system.

– Antihistamines are typically taken to relieve the itching associated with atopic dermatitis. Antihistamines such as Benadryl are especially an effective option if nighttime itching interferes with a good night’s sleep. Antihistamines only work when a patient’s symptoms are histamine-related, however.

– When atopic dermatitis affects large sections of the body or leads to complications, doctors usually prescribe oral corticosteroids to get the situation under control.

– In severe eczema cases in adults, when no other treatments improve symptoms, doctors may recommend or .

– In case of an infection, the use of antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungal medications may be necessary. Most skin infections occur due to scratching, which worsens the inflammation.

– Applying coal tar to the affected areas of the skin may ease itching. However, coal tar products shouldn’t be applied to areas that are too irritated as this can exacerbate the rashes. Some tar solutions can be helpful in managing atopic dermatitis following a successful treatment with a potent medication.
