In most cases of atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema or simply eczema), medications are the most common form of treatment in relieving inflammation, irritation, and itching. In mild cases of atopic dermatitis, home remedies and self-care measures such as moisturizing regularly may be enough to control the symptoms.
However, in cases where symptoms do not improve with at-home treatments, a more potent form of medical treatment may be necessary to ease the symptoms of atopic eczema.
Atopic Eczema Treatments: Medication Options
Topical therapies such as ointments are the most common form of atopic eczema treatment. These medications are dabbed onto the affected parts of the skin on a regular basis until there is an improvement. Antihistamines and oral corticosteroids are sometimes also prescribed depending on the patient’s symptoms.

Some tar solutions can be helpful in managing atopic dermatitis following a successful treatment with a potent medication.
