So you’ve looked through all the different types of cholesterol medications, chosen one, and picked up your prescription from the doctors. Now what?
How Long Will It Take For Cholesterol Medications to Kick In?
After someone starts one, or multiple cholesterol medications, their doctor is going to want to do a checkup not long after. They will start by looking at that individual’s cholesterol levels again. Typically, cholesterol medications take roughly six weeks for the medication to fully kick in.
Sometimes, the initial dose isn’t enough, so test results may reflect that. Just keep that in the back of your mind. If this is the case, your doctor will either adjust your dosage or suggest other cholesterol medications. Now, if that is the route your doctor takes, and he or she chooses other cholesterol medications, you will need to get your cholesterol levels checked again. Usually, in 4 to 8 weeks.
What happens if you achieve your target LDL cholesterol level? Well, when that happens, your doctor will be required to check your cholesterol levels roughly every two to three months for at least a year. After that year is up, your doctor will have to check your cholesterol levels every 4 to 6 months.
Similar to other forms of medication, if you want your cholesterol medications to work, you are going to have to follow the directions. Don’t skip a step, keep track of your dosing history.
If you feel like you’re not benefitting from taking cholesterol medication, then know that you can improve your cholesterol levels by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That includes working out and eating healthy. The transition is easy to do, too. Just start simple, perhaps by adding some oats in your cereal in the mornings, and fish to your lunch or dinner. These will all help lower LDL cholesterol.
