Before traveling to a different country, sometimes you need to get vaccinated. If you’re going to India or Mali, you are definitely going to want to do that. Why? Because it can prevent your adventure from turning into a long trip to the hospital.

There are a number of vaccinations required for travelers. If, however, you are going to India, know that you are not required to get a meningitis shot. Why? Well, because meningitis is often found in Africa – specifically, in the northern belt of Africa. Therefore, it is not a massive risk for people heading to India.

However, if you are going to any of the places listed below, you are going to need to get a meningitis shot:

– Benin

– Togo

– Cameroon

– Mali

– Burkina Faso

– Ghana

It is extremely important that if you are going somewhere where meningitis is commonly found that you get vaccinated. This is a serious disease, one that can turn life-threatening in a matter of minutes. Also, it can be spread through close contact, so that makes it even more contractable while traveling. Why? Because most travelers share close quarters and don’t usually live in luxury while abroad.

Even if you are just thinking about traveling to a different country, it is important to talk with a doctor to see what vaccinations you need depending on your chosen destination.

There are a number of options for someone looking to get a meningitis shot. Most meningitis vaccines have a few side effects, most common being a headache or skin irritation where the shot was administered. However, some meningitis vaccines can cause an allergic reaction. If this happens to you, seek medical attention, do not wait. Even if its the slightest irritation, it is best to reach out to your doctor, or any health professional for that matter.
